At the Top of the Bench competition at Bangor University this month a team from St Gerard's won the regional heats, beating last year's winners Rydal Penrhos who took second place.  The regional competition is hosted by Bangor University's School of Chemistry and St Gerard's students Andreas, Shenona, Matthew and Jacob will now travel to Loughborough University later in the year for the national Top of the Bench competition.  Top of the bench is run by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) with an aim to enthuse and excite students about Chemistry in an effort to secure the next generation of talented chemical scientists.  It is one of the RSC's longest-standing activities for school children and has been run for more than 20 years.  "Each year, teams of four 13-16 year-old students compete for the Top of the Bench trophy.  The competition starts with regional heats with take on various forms, including quizzes, presentations and practical experiments.  The regional winners then have a chance to compete agains each other in the UK final."
